Guide to Classifications of Declared Natural Disasters

DRFA Category Explainer 640In a time when certain severe weather events seem to be occurring more frequently, we have sourced some information about the categorization of the different types of natural disasters, in relation to government funding assistance. We hope this will assist people currently dealing with these unforeseen circumstances in our region.

The Rural Assistance Authority (RAA) has divided declared natural disasters in four Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangement (DRFA) categories: A, B, C and D;  "A" being the least severe.

Financial support and assistance is being provided to affected parties through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Here's an example of classification applied to a recent local natural disaster, the Armidale Tornado (Storm), which occurred on the 14th October 2021. It was classed by the RAA as Category B, and has a unique reference number: AGRN 979.

To learn more about these four DRFA categories, follow this link. Or download a PDF copy of their Factsheets.

Funding and assistance available under the DRFA may include:

    • Help for eligible people whose homes or belongings have been damaged (eligibility criteria apply)
    • Concessional interest rate loans (as described above) for small businesses, primary producers and non-profit organisations
    • Freight subsidies for primary producers, and
    • Grants to eligible non-profit organisations.

N.B. Primary producers are strongly encouraged to report damage following a severe weather event with their Local Land Services (LLS) office or telephone on 1300 795 299.

To apply for a concessional loan, freight subsidy or grant, contact the NSW Rural Assistance Authority (RAA) on 1800 678 593 or visit www.raa.nsw.gov.au
