What can burying old cotton undies tell us about soil health?
Quite a bit, according to UNE soil scientists Assoc Prof Lisa Lobry de Bruyn and Dr Ivanah Oliver.
They’ll be at the Black Gully Festival on 8 November to share insights from their book (currently in development), and invite locals to discuss soil experiences and ideas for better soil engagement.
Their book, Talking Soil: a down-to-earth guide to soil engagement, aims to connect soil practitioners (gardeners/farmers/etc.) and soil scientists (academic professionals) to prioritise local soil knowledge and promote actionable sustainable soil management practices through conversation and engagement.
Visit the Talking Soil tent at the festival for a chat about your own soil experiences and questions or catch their short presentations:
- How healthy is my soil? – why not soil some undies! 10:30am & 1:00pm
- Digging Together: Where Soil Science Meets Community – 11:00am & 1:30pm
Also on display will be a “model” soil profile that kids can explore and which demonstrate how a soil is built from the ground up, by horizons.
