The Australian Plant Society's aim is to inspire all Australians to love, grow and conserve our native plants.
The Armidale and District Group is based on the Northern Tablelands of NSW.
Our District
The Northern Tablelands is the narrow highlands area of the New England region, stretching from the Moonbi Range at Tamworth to the Queensland border. This region includes substantial areas 800m above sea-level, with a cold climate, distinctive vegetation and characteristic granitic, basaltic, sedimentary and metamorphic landscapes.
Working Bee
Our next working bee at the Arboretum is scheduled for Saturday 31st January, from 9am to 12md. Please note the changed day from Friday to Saturday. In response to committee and member feedback We are trialling holding the working bees on the last Saturday morning of the month.
It is two months since the last working bee and we have had a very dry, hot summer. The effects of this are evident in the Arboretum.
For this working bee, we will concentrate on getting things tidied up and mulched and defer any plantings until the weather cools in late February or March.
The Lookout Garden will need some weeding, pruning and removal of dead plants. The aftereffects of the snowfall in early August is now more evident with broken branches now declaring themselves.
The other garden beds are showing some weed breakthroughs so they will require weeding and then a thick layer of mulch applied. There are broken branches and bark from the Eucalypts that are somewhat untidy so a pick up and removal of this debris is required. In the eastern beds, there is a dominance of Cassinia quinquefaria that is straggly and needs a good pruning and shaping.
There will be a job for everyone regardless of gardening experience and physical condition.
Please bring along gear appropriate to what you would like to do:
Wheelbarrows, Secateurs, Pruning saws, Gloves, Morning Tea and Water
As the weather may be hot – we will do the heavier stuff early on.
