Soil Carbon & Alternative Cropping Systems Field Day

Venue - Ran and Jenny Mitchell’s cropping property ‘Leyland’, west of North Star. Download the flier here.

Speakers include Dr Terry McCosker of RCS and Carbon Link, and Ian Moss, the founder and managing director of Farm Agronomy & Resource Management.

The day will be an opportunity for like-minded people to gather on property and discuss soil carbon and alternative cropping systems with leading field experts.

Dr Terry McCosker has been influential in shaping the evolution and development of agriculture in Australia over the past 50 years. He has delivered training and seminars to more than 8,000 farmers and graziers on pasture research and management; beef cattle production, reproduction and nutrition; strategic business analysis, management and training; and soil carbon. Terry’s innovative work has been integral in bridging the gap between traditional agriculture and regenerative agriculture, with a focus on maximising profits and improving sustainability to improve the viability and resilience of rural enterprises. Through Carbon Link, he has been assisting farmers seeking to enter the emerging carbon trading market and earn income from improving their soils and soil carbon sequestration on-farm.

The day will also give attendees the opportunity to see and hear first-hand some of the inspiring work being done at ‘Leyland’, to improve soil health and nutrition. The Mitchell’s ceased burning stubble more than 45 years ago and have since embarked on a gradual transition from stubble mulch farming to minimum till to controlled traffic farming to biological farming.

Topics on the day will include:

    • How to increase (and measure) the carbon content of crop growing soils, and associated economic benefits
    • Sustainable and profitable fertiliser practices
    • Compost brewing and liquid inject fertiliser systems
    • Alternative stubble management learnings and results, including crimped straw versus standing stubble and a look at the Mitchell’s crimping machine
    • Multi species cover cropping, including paddock walks to inspect cover crops on-site.
