In recent days, Dr Adrian Zammit, CEO of Landcare NSW has written to all Landcare participants with an update on the future of the organisation. There is a call to action from the NSW Landcare community for a restructure of Landcare nationally.
Dear Landcarers,
I’m writing to update you on our efforts to achieve one national Landcare organisation that brings together Landcare Australia Limited’s strengths with the functions of the representative body, the National Landcare Network.
The NSW Landcare community has reached a consensus that one national body is essential to the growth and development of Landcare in Australia.
A letter conveying the LNSW Council’s resolution was sent to the Chairs of Landcare Australia Limited and National Landcare Network on 17 September.
No response has been received from the Chair or CEO of Landcare Australia Limited (LAL).
The Chair and CEO of National Landcare Network (NLN) advised verbally they support Landcare NSW’s position.
In other developments:
• A director of LAL, Ms Rachel Gatehouse, spoke to LNSW executive committee members but advised this was in an informal capacity
• Federal Minister for the Environment, Ms Sussan Ley, and co-convenor of the Federal Parliamentary Friends of Landcare, Senator Perrin Davey, are aware of the issue and are taking an interest.
This issue has been running now for more than three years and is resulting in Landcare missing out on significant opportunities from the Federal Government to grow and develop further.
The creation of a single body is not a complex task if there is the right leadership with the appropriate mindset, culture, intent, skills and commitment to achieve it.
We will continue to advocate for reform of the national bodies that exist to support Landcare and will keep you informed of developments.
If you wish to discuss this further please don’t hesitate to contact me directly on azammit@landcarensw.org.au
Yours sincerely,
Dr Adrian Zammit | CEO
