What does Landcare have to do with your Mental Health?

GlenavonHistorically, mental health issues were met with stigma and denial, but in 2024, this stigma is slowly diminishing.

Elizabeth Rosser from Southern New England Landcare (SNEL) understands the vital link between mental health and land care, emphasizing that supporting people is crucial for effective land management.

Southern New England Landcare are addressing mental health through Mental Health First Aid workshops, designed to train individuals to act as first responders during mental health crises.

These workshops teach participants how to identify signs of mental health issues and guide individuals to professional help.

Farmers, especially men, face unique challenges due to isolation and reluctance to leave their farms.

While women often build strong social networks, men typically need more practical incentives, such as farm-related events, to engage.

Elizabeth's approach includes integrating social connections into farming events to address these challenges.

SNEL's recent project, the Drought Resistance Pasture Landscape Project, demonstrated the power of social connection, showing how relationships can evolve from initial discomfort to genuine camaraderie.

In today's busy world, traditional social activities like tennis days and BBQs have declined, making it crucial to seek new ways to foster connections.

SNE Landcare's recent Mental Health First Aid workshops aim to enhance awareness of mental health issues, ultimately benefiting individuals, their families, and their businesses.
