Sprouted barley as green fodder | field day

DSC 0165SmallSouthern New England Landcare will hold the first field day of its kind in the Southern New England region for farmers and students in late August.

A Guyra property is currently producing sprouted barley as an alternative green feed, and will be hosting a field day from 09:30 am on Friday the 25th of August 2017.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss the potential of green fodder technologies to improve livestock productivity in all conditions and its use as supplementary feed.

Derek Smith, a current owner and operator of the technology said, “This event is the perfect opportunity for people to see first-hand how this option may be able to fit into their business.”

“We’ll be demonstrating how we here at Working with Nature, are adopting this technology into our system, suiting it to all types of livestock in all types of conditions,” he said.

Animal nutritionist Professor Roger Hegarty from the University of New England, and technology owner Mr Derek Smith, will be speakers on the day, with each having different experiences and perspectives on using green fodder.

Prof Hegarty believes that the technology has its place in the industry and will discuss some research that has been done about feeding sprouted barley to ruminants.

Mr Smith will discuss his experience in the set-up and running of this technology, and his hopes for it into the future of his farm.

Local farmers and any interested individuals are invited to this event, to learn about and ask questions regarding the advantages of the technology.

Mrs Karen Zirkler from Southern New England Landcare is engaging several University of New England Rural Science students to organise the event, and said, “Having the students help us design and develop these kinds of events is so valuable.”

“We need the help, so we are very grateful for their involvement, and we know we are adding to their educational experience in working with them!” she said.
