Funding Opportunity Provides Long-Term NRM Benefits

Direct seed Llangothlin320Northern Tablelands Local Land Services is committed to working with landholders to invest in the long term sustainability of the region.

Landholders looking at ways to improve management of natural resources on farm are encouraged to contact Northern Tablelands Local Land Services who are delivering a range of incentives.

Leith Hawkins, Environment Team Leader, notes that this grant program demonstrates an on-going commitment to natural resource management and environmental works with farmers in the Northern Tablelands.

“We are working to boost environmental outcomes on farm by connecting native vegetation patches and improving the health of our waterways and adjacent land, as well as improving conditions for threatened species and threatened ecological communities,” said Leith.

An Expression of Interest process will be open for projects that achieve improved natural resource management on farms.

The Northern Tablelands Local Land Services team can help identify opportunities and work through project ideas with landholders. Projects are to be delivered by December 2019.
Examples of eligible projects include protecting and improving waterways; providing alternate water points where stock are excluded from water sources; planting shelter belts or wind breaks with native trees and shrubs; improving habitat for threatened species like woodland birds and koalas and protecting and managing existing native vegetation.

Leith recognises the invaluable possibilities presented by the program.

“With the current conditions proving challenging for the majority of landholders, the program also provides an opportunity for forward planning and preparation for future drought conditions,” Leith said.

The sought-after program has garnered considerable success in the past. As a result, Leith Hawkins is expecting a high level of interest this time.

“I encourage landholders interested in improving the natural resources on their farm to apply. You are welcome to contact us to discuss your project ideas,” Leith said.

Expressions of Interest will be assessed against a set of criteria including funding availability, landholder contribution, NSW and Australian Government priorities and value for money.

Further information is available at www.northerntablelands.lls.nsw.gov.au/our-region/grants-and-funding or contact Andrew Walsh on 02 6720 8318.

While Leith understands that many landholders’ priorities are currently being directed elsewhere, he believes it is worthwhile taking advantage of the program that will deliver substantial benefits in the long run.
